what i'd really like to do
here are a few projects that i would really really like to do:
1. I'd like to edit an anthology on childhood. poems stories essays plays on a theme: things you weren't supposed to see/hear/touch/know--but did anyway. my reasons for such a project is this. what exactly is our notion of childhood? when we talk about children, we vacillate from innocent savage to sweet angel to spawn of satan. but what were we? we cannot possibly know what kids get up to today, what they see and hear and experience. what they are shocked by. but we can remember and we can tell on ourselves. i don't want it to be an academic text because no one will read it and because too much fuss is made on formal study and theory. but i'm not being ambitious, i don't want to change the world. all i want is to work with a bunch of really great people to make a book that will make people remember, and laugh or cry with recognition.
2. I would like to get someone to re-publish Nick Joaquin's Pop Stories for Groovy Kids. Or if possible, i'd do it myself. Looking at all the websites and noticeboard messages, i realized that this book is a cult classic. But i also think that with the stuff we can manage today, we could really improve on the quality of the books. Glossy or matte lamianted finish? Do we keep it in its large board book size or reprint it in a smaller hardback collection? Could we contact the old illustrators and get them to refine the pictures they felt unfinished?
What was your favorite Pop Story? And if you could change the format, illustrations, book quality, what would you change?
3. i'd like to publish decent young adult novels for philippine kids. but they wouldn't be marketed for teenagers-- they'd have to be marketed for twenty-somethings so that the teenagers would read them. to be perfectly honest i haven't seen too many local YA novels that really impress me. lille bose's Una and Miguel was the best so far. when i think of the body of work i'm studying here, that's when i feel the lack. i'm sure there are some great books that Filipino y.a. would like to read but are probably buried in school booklists. or they're out of print. i'd like to go back to all the books i was told to read in high school. books that i naturally never read because they were on the school book list. i wonder if any of them would be interesting to re-package and remarket. oh well. when i get home.
