We are far too young and clever

and things won't ever change...

Luis has a link on his music blog that Joelle and I love. It's a collection of essays on one's favorite songs. They're all very well written without being too ANALytical about things. The essay luis quotes in his blog is on Elvis Costello's Alison. It's about how everytime the author hears it play he falls in love with Alison over and over again. How every time is the first time with Alison. I think that's the power of a favorite song. It has the power to sound new and familiar each time you listen to it. You turn it on and it brings you back to the rained out hyper happy concerts of your youth.

My favorite song in the whole wide world is Come on Eileen. It's not the coolest song in the world but I've found that throughout my life, this is the song that never fails to make me smile. Whether it's Save Ferris or Dexy's Midnight Runners or a local ska band this song always makes me feel like I'm back in college with the rest of the world waiting for me. I know this sounds silly but it reminds me of Andrew Marvell's poem to his coy mistress which basically says, if i had all the time in the world, i'd make love to every inch of you as every inch of you deserves. But we're all going to die so please please PLEASE get it on with me!!!!!!!

that pretty red dress oh my thoughts i confess they are dirty oh come on eileen at this moment, you mean everything...we are far too young and clever and things won't ever change...come on eileen...
shallow.naive.horny.ironic. AND sweet. how did THAT happen? who can resist the artless urgency of the young man who wants it? if he's sweet and polite enough, you kinda wanna help him out.
go on then. :P
